Thornicroft is in a wildlife area which is far away from most of the rest of the world. You won't regret the journey!
The Lodge is situated on the Luangwa River bordering the South Luangwa National Park in the Eastern Province of Zambia. We are 1.5 km away from the Park Entrance Gate.
Reaching us is straightforward and can be done by road or you can fly into the local Mfuwe Airport.
Drive to Thornicroft
You can drive to Thornicroft with a normal 2-wheel drive during dry season, perhaps it is safer to use a 4x4 during raining season.
We can also arrange road transfers for you from Malawi, the Malawi/Zambia border or from Chipata.
If you have your own vehicle or have hired a self-drive vehicle, please check the state of the road with us before you start in order to time your journey correctly.
By road from Lilongwe in Malawi will take about 4-6 hours, by road from Lusaka will take about 9-12 hours. Both routes go via Chipata in Zambia. The road from Lusaka via Chipata to Mfuwe is a tarmac road and in good condition. It is advised to refuel your car at the Petrol Station in Chipata.
Please note: We do not recommend taking the Petauke Road to Mfuwe due to its bad condition
Fly to Thornicroft
Flying from Lusaka or Livingstone can be the quickest and most comfortable way to reach us. During high season Proflight Zambia runs 2-3 daily flights to Mfuwe airport, during low season 1 flight on most weekdays.
Flying from Lilongwe to Mfuwe is also possible. Currently there are daily flights. Ask us for more information.
We can arrange airport transfers for you. Please tell us your time of arrival so that we can pick you up from Mfuwe airport. Thornicroft is only at 30 minutes’ drive away from the airport, it is a fascinating journey through local villages and bush.
It is possible to travel from Lusaka or Lilongwe to Luangwa by public transport. There are several bus companies who transfer their clients in coaches or buses to Chipata and Mfuwe. From Chipata you can also take a private or shared taxi.
